outreach

At the Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM), we use the transformative power of music to: enhance student engagement, boost academic achievement, and nurture the overall well-being of young people.

As a community nonprofit, MAMM has developed the Amplify Initiative, which forges collaborative partnerships with schools and service organizations to expand access to music education. We offer music programs that amplify the impact of other community organizations, creating customized enrichment opportunities for young people, regardless of their background or circumstances.

OUR REACH

We currently offer Amplify programming in four Maine communities:

Amplify Portland: MAMM engages with the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine, the Portland YMCA, and Portland Public Schools with extracurricular programs. MAMM is partnering with Long Creek Youth Development Center to provide music enrichment for their clients. In partnership with Best Buddies, MAMM works with students with disabilities as a Kennedy Center Access/VSA Program Site.

Amplify Waterville: In partnership with Elm City Music MAMM coordinated rock band lessons. MAMM also works with Waterville Senior High School to offer concerts at the school and MAMM bands perform for the community as part of events like the opening celebration for the Colby College Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts.

Amplify Bangor: MAMM offers extracurricular music instruction during the school year, Rock Camps in the summer, and community concerts like Bang-GORE, Girls Rock, and Pre-Surgam. Bangor collaborators include the Bangor Region Leadership Institute, Bangor Parks & Recreation Department, Husson/NESCOM, Bangor Arts Exchange, Queen City Music Hall, and Bangor public schools.

Amplify Washington County: Primary partners include Cobscook Community Learning Center, the Maine Sea Coast Mission EdGE program, the University of Maine at Machias, Healthy Acadia, Down East Salmon Federation, and local schools. MAMM provides Cherryfield Elementary with a music teacher, organizes music concerts at Naraguagus Jr/Sr High School, and brings music to community events like the Columbia Falls Smelt Fry. MAMM has secured a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member to expand partnerships and projects, increase access to music instruction, and develop music programming in the region.

OUR APPROACH

While program delivery varies by community, the Amplify Initiative is built on three fundamental pillars:

Collaborative Program Development and Execution: We work hand-in-hand with schools and community organizations to enhance their services through music education.

Collaboration allows service organizations to diversify their offerings with music; broadening their connections, relevance, and impact. These partnerships are also essential in how we reach under-resourced populations.

Community Performance Management: We provide student musicians with platforms to showcase their talents through MAMM events and community performances.

Performing boosts students' self-esteem, instills a sense of accomplishment, and encourages the pursuit of aspirations with confidence. These events also serve as opportunities for community stakeholders to promote arts education and youth development.

Financial Support: We offer scholarships and assistance to passionate students facing financial barriers to music education.

Financial aid promotes engagement, equity, and challenges systemic inequalities. This inclusivity enriches the overall experience for all participants by bringing together a diversity of perspectives, experiences, and abilities.
