VETERANS ROCK!
Veterans Rock! is a pilot music education and community engagement program serving veterans and military-connected families. Project funding is made possible through the National Endowment for the Arts and Mid-America Arts Alliance.
The Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM) will provide scholarships that allow veterans and service members to participate in music lessons and band programs at little or no cost. Participants will receive personalized instruction from MAMM teaching artists, opportunities to perform with fellow musicians, and access to community concerts and events. The program is designed to reduce barriers to participation while promoting creative expression, social connection, resilience, and overall well-being.
The project will serve approximately four to eight veterans during its pilot year, with programming running from September 2026 through June 2027. Veterans will have opportunities to learn an instrument, develop musical skills, participate in band rehearsals, and perform publicly as part of MAMM's music community. Family members may also participate in selected activities, strengthening family connections through shared musical experiences.
Key partners include the VA Maine Healthcare System, which will assist with outreach, participant referrals, program guidance, and evaluation. Their involvement ensures that the program is responsive to the unique needs and experiences of veterans while connecting participants to a broader network of support services.
Through Veterans Rock!, MAMM aims to demonstrate the power of music as a tool for healing, connection, personal growth, and community engagement while building a sustainable model for serving veterans across Maine.
